Dubai to Abu Dhabi by Train: Your Guide to Etihad Rail

October 6, 2026 · 6 min read

There is now a new way to travel from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, and it could make a big difference to the way visitors explore the UAE.

Etihad Rail has started passenger services from Dubai, with trains running between Al Yalayis Station in Dubai and Mohamed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi. The Dubai service officially began on September 30, 2026, giving travellers another option besides driving, taxis and buses. Etihad Rail

For anyone visiting Dubai who has been thinking about spending a day in Abu Dhabi, the new train is particularly interesting.

How long does the Dubai to Abu Dhabi train take?

The current Etihad Rail timetable shows the journey taking around 1 hour and 4 minutes.

That makes it a fairly straightforward trip between the two emirates. Five direct services operate each way on the Dubai–Abu Dhabi route, with departures spread across the morning, afternoon and evening.

The important thing to remember, though, is that the train does not take you directly from Downtown Dubai to central Abu Dhabi. Your journey starts at Al Yalayis Station, so you’ll need to factor in the time required to get there from your hotel.

Where is the Etihad Rail station in Dubai?

The Dubai passenger station is Al Yalayis Station, located in the Jumeirah Golf Estates area.

One useful feature for visitors is its connection to Dubai’s public transport system. The station is connected to Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station on the Red Line by a pedestrian bridge, so travellers can combine the Metro and Etihad Rail rather than depending entirely on taxis. The station also has bus, taxi, ride-hailing and parking facilities.

If you’re staying around Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina or another area served by the Metro, check the complete route before booking your train. Getting to Al Yalayis is part of the journey.

How much is the Etihad Rail ticket from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

The starting fare for the Dubai–Abu Dhabi route is AED 39 in Comfort Class.

Premium Class starts at AED 109, although the actual fare can vary depending on the service and travel date.

There is also an important difference between booking online and buying a ticket at the station. Recent reporting based on the booking system found that a Comfort Class ticket that starts at AED 39 online can cost AED 60 when purchased from a station vending machine. If you’re planning your trip in advance, checking the online fare is worthwhile.

What is the train like?

This isn’t a basic commuter train.

Etihad Rail’s passenger service has been designed as a modern intercity railway, with guaranteed seating, Wi-Fi, charging facilities and dedicated luggage space. Premium Class provides an upgraded onboard experience.

For tourists, that means you can sit back, charge your phone and use the journey to plan the rest of your day in Abu Dhabi instead of dealing with highway traffic.

How do you book Etihad Rail tickets?

Tickets can be booked through the official Etihad Rail website and mobile app. The booking system allows passengers to check available services, choose seats and manage their bookings.

I’d recommend booking online if you already know which day you want to travel, particularly during weekends and busy holiday periods.

Can you visit Abu Dhabi as a day trip from Dubai?

Yes, and this is probably where the new service becomes most useful for visitors.

You could leave Dubai in the morning, spend the day exploring Abu Dhabi and return in the evening. The train makes the intercity part of the journey much easier to plan.

There is plenty to see once you arrive. Depending on how much time you have, you could visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, explore Louvre Abu Dhabi, spend time on Yas Island, or visit Qasr Al Watan.

Just remember that the Abu Dhabi station is in Mohamed Bin Zayed City. You will still need local transportation to reach attractions elsewhere in Abu Dhabi.

Is the train better than driving?

That depends on what kind of trip you’re planning.

If you’re travelling between Dubai and Abu Dhabi simply to spend the day in the city, the train is an attractive option. You don’t have to concentrate on the road, and the scheduled journey time makes planning easier.

A car still makes more sense if you’re travelling with a large family, carrying lots of luggage or planning to visit several places that are spread around Abu Dhabi.

For visitors staying in Dubai, I’d look at the door-to-door journey, rather than just comparing the train’s 64-minute travel time with the driving time. Your hotel-to-station and station-to-attraction journeys can make a noticeable difference.

What makes Etihad Rail important for Dubai visitors?

The Dubai–Abu Dhabi connection is only one part of a much larger railway project.

Etihad Rail is rolling out passenger services in phases across the UAE. Dubai and Al Dhaid joined the passenger network on September 30, with more destinations planned during the coming months. The network is ultimately intended to connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE.

That could eventually make it much easier for travellers to see more of the UAE without hiring a car for every trip.

The passenger railway has already attracted significant interest. Etihad Rail reported that more than 70,000 tickets had been sold by August, even before the Dubai service began.

Should you take the Etihad Rail from Dubai to Abu Dhabi?

If you’re already planning to visit Abu Dhabi from Dubai, it’s definitely an option worth considering.

The biggest advantage isn’t simply the speed. It’s the fact that you now have another reliable way to make the journey without driving yourself. The connection to Dubai Metro also makes the service more practical for visitors who don’t have a rental car.

And this is only the beginning. As more stations are added to the UAE passenger network, travelling around the country by train should become increasingly useful for both residents and visitors.

For anyone planning a UAE holiday, Dubai is no longer just a starting point — it can be a convenient base for exploring more of the country by rail.
